Melanie Wing of Equifax Elected Chair of the 2013 SCIP Board

The SCIP Board of Directors elected Melanie Wing, Vice President, Strategic Marketing at Equifax as the 2013 Board Chair.

Joining fellow 2013 Officers of SCIP — August Jackson, Vice Chair and Andrew Beurschgens, Secretary-Treasurer  — Melanie Wing will serve as Chair for 2013.  She will be providing guidance and direction to the organization while working closely with the new Executive Director, Nan Bulger.

“I am honored to serve the members of SCIP as Board Chair,” said Ms. Wing. “We are in a time of transition and growth for the Society and I am very pleased to support SCIP during this exciting period of change.”

Melanie Wing serves as Vice President Strategic Marketing and Customer Insights Leader for Equifax, Inc. where she is responsible for understanding industry and market trends, customer insight, and the competitive dynamics that drive the development and implementation of results-oriented business strategies.  She has a long history of working in strategic and competitive intelligence and this will be her second turn as the Chair of the Board.  She has previously received SCIP’s Catalyst Award in 1999 as well as receiving the SCIP Fellow Award in 2007.


Nan Bulger Appointed New Executive Director of SCIP

Effective January 7, 2013, Nan Bulger, formerly Senior Director of Strategic Planning, Market and Business Intelligence for Philips Healthcare, becomes the SCIP Executive Director.

A long-time dedicated executive strategist and competitive intelligence advocate and professional, Nan Bulger has had an extensive career  as both a practitioner and an international consultant, serving profit, non-profit and academic entities.   Effective January 7th, 2013 Ms. Bulger will assume the duties of the Executive Director of the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) association.

“These are challenging economic times for the global community and the competency of intelligence is a key skill and component in equipping a company and its employees in competing in the global landscape,” said Ms. Bulger. “SCIP exists for the membership and we intend to build an association that is fully focused on delivering value to its membership. I look forward to leading the SCIP organization and building a globally recognized organization that equips its membership with four things; education and training, a forum for debate, best practice tools and frameworks and a formal global network of peers.

“In the coming months and years, SCIP will soon see the benefit from Nan’s leadership, strategy and intelligence capabilities,” added Michel Bernaiche, Chair of the SCIP Board of Directors. “Her passion and enthusiasm for the intelligence profession is a breath of fresh air, she is the perfect match for the challenges SCIP faces. I wish her the best.”

Ms. Bulger was most recently Global Lead and Sector Senior Director of Strategic Planning, Market and Business Intelligence for Philips Healthcare.  She has progressively built career experience as a revenue generator with P&L responsibility in a variety of operational functions across the business continuum where she consistently drove the application of competitive intelligence as a foundational and critical competency and discipline.  A consummate international team builder, Ms. Bulger has led global professionals through times of change and crisis in the creation and successful implementation of full scale strategic plans, market strategies, and competitive and business intelligence analytics programs. She has a B.S. in Physics/Environmental Science from Bridgewater State University, an M.B.A. in Strategy and Marketing from Southern New Hampshire University, and an Executive Certificate in Strategic Risk and Uncertainty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Sean Campbell of Cascade Insights Elected to SCIP Board

Elected by the SCIP membership, Sean Campbell will start his board term on January 1, 2013. He is a co-owner of Cascade Insights a competitive intelligence and business strategy firm that targets Fortune 500 organizations. “I’m honored to be elected to the SCIP board and I’m looking forward to working with all of the great individuals, both on staff and volunteers, who make up SCIP’s leadership team,” said Mr. Campbell.

 Added Michel Bernaiche, SCIP Board chair, “Sean brings an entrepreneurial and solution provider perspective to the Board of Directors that will add balance to an already impressive perspective of academic and practitioner views.  We look forward to his contributions to the advancement of SCIP.”

 Mr. Campbell is also an accomplished author and a frequent speaker on competitive intelligence and strategy topics.  His fourth book, “Going Beyond Google: Gathering Internet Intelligence,” was listed as a must-read for 2009–2010 by the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals society. He was also chair of the Oregon Chapter of SCIP from 2007 to 2009 and was the recipient of a catalyst award from SCIP.  In terms of public speaking, Mr. Campbell regularly delivers workshops and sessions at national and international events.  Additionally, he is a contributing assistant professor at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management, where he teaches industry analysis and competitive intelligence.

Mike Molnar of Genentech Elected to SCIP 2013 Board of Directors

Mike Molnar will be joining the 2013 Board of the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals’ (SCIP) organization in January. Mr. Molnar manages a staff of over 20 competitive intelligence professionals at Genentech that is focused on tracking events within the biopharma industry and laying out strategic implications and responses to them. He ensures that all aspects of the CI cycle are done at a high level, are compliant, and meet customer needs

Mr. Molnar joined Genentech in 2006 as group manager of forecasting and business analysis. Prior positions included founding an artisan bakery (responsible for all business aspects and managing a staff of 50) and various positions in venture capital, investment banking and corporate finance. Mike received a BBA from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School.

Zena Applebaum of Bennett Jones LLP Elected to SCIP 2013 Board.

At the conclusion of the SCIP board elections, Zena Applebaum will join the 2013 Board of the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). A regular speaker and writer on market and competitive intelligence topics in Canada and abroad, most recently she is the author of “Business Intelligence for Law Firms” published in November 2012 by The Ark Group in association with Managing Partner.  She will be the first law firm individual to serve on a SCIP board.

“It’s an honor to be elected to the SCIP Board”, says Ms. Applebaum. “The election of a Canadian competitive intelligence practitioner from the legal industry is evidence of the international growth and breadth of intelligence work within organizations. I look forward to serving the intelligence community and building on the strength and momentum of the organization.”

 Zena Applebaum is the Manager of Intelligence & Intranet at Bennett Jones LLP, a leading International law firm based in Canada. With 10 years experience in the legal industry, her primary responsibilities include conducting analysis of market and competitor performance to inform the firm’s practice development, client relationship management, counter-intelligence and marketing.

 Ms Applebaum brings a unique perspective to intelligence and the dynamics of market and industry issues as a result her broad business development, data management, marketing, and corporate research experience in a variety of sectors including technology, healthcare and the professional services. She has a joint academic and applied Master of Arts degree in Communication and Culture from York and Ryerson Universities.

August Jackson of Ernst & Young Elected 2013 Board Vice-Chair

During the last full board meeting of the calendar year the SCIP Board of Directors elected the Officers of the Society. Joining Melanie Wing, 2013 Chair, and Andrew Beurschgens, 2012-3 Secretary-Treasurer, will be Board member August Jackson, Associate Director of Strategic Market Intelligence at Ernst & Young as Vice-Chair. He will succeed Wing as Board Chair in 2014.

“This is an exciting time to be part of SCIP and part of this profession,” said August. “I’m honored to serve in this role. Over the coming year we will build SCIP and grow the value we offer to competitive intelligence and strategy practitioners, service providers and academics.”

August’s functional expertise is in corporate and business strategy, marketing and competitive intelligence. He has demonstrated expertise in knowledge discovery through primary and secondary research (HUMINT and OSINT), statistical analysis, social network analysis and visual analytics. Prior to joining Ernst & Young August spent over 10 years in the telecommunications industry in marketing and competitive intelligence roles with Verizon, British Telecom and AT&T’s Concert joint venture. He has also worked with government agencies to help them apply commercial intelligence methods and semantic technology to government intelligence challenges. August received his MBA from the University of Maryland and his BA in International Affairs from George Washington University.
