Leavitt’s 13 Forces: When Porter’s is Not Enough – SCIP Iowa Chapter November 1

Building on Porter’s Five Forces analysis, Judy Leavitt of Rockwell Collins demonstrates her holistic approach to competitive intelligence analysis that incorporates multiple analysis, strategy, and risk management tools to build strategic insights and recommendations.

Competitive intelligence is knowledge and foreknowledge of an organization’s entire competitive environment that leads to management action. Traditionally, this starts with applying Michael Porter’s Five Forces analysis. But what options are available when analyzing the entire competitive environment requires more? To gain comprehensive insights, Judy Leavitt, Strategic Intelligence Manager at Rockwell Collins has developed a “Thirteen Forces” approach to competitive analysis that includes Porter’s Five Forces analysis, STEEP analysis from the strategic foresight domain, and enterprise risk management analysis.

In this one-hour workshop, attendees will be divided into two teams, each challenged to use Leavitt’s 13 Forces to capture insights into assigned markets and competitors. At the conclusion of the workshop, each team will share three strategic insights and recommended actions based on those insights. Key take-aways include:

  • A guide and instruction into applying multiple strategic analysis tools to gain additional insights from a holistic perspective.
  • Shared learning and practical exercise on using Leavitt’s 13 Forces to capture insights into assigned markets and competitors.
  • Application into how competitive intelligence professionals can take a leadership role in applying insights from the analysis into recommendations and actions.
